As you explore HAWSÉ L’HOMME, you’ll occasionally notice a symbol displayed alongside select businesses, creators, restaurants, hotels, designers, and entrepreneurs. I call it The Heritage Mark, and it serves as a simple way to identify Black-owned businesses featured throughout this journal.

The design reflects something deeply personal. At its center is the African continent, honoring my family’s African heritage and acknowledging the history, creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurship that continue to influence generations around the world. Encircling Africa is a Zen-inspired brushstroke, chosen to represent balance, mindfulness, intention, and the belief that meaningful success is built with purpose rather than noise. Together, these elements express heritage, excellence, and calm confidence.

The Heritage Mark is not a certification, endorsement, rating, or paid designation. Its purpose is simply to help readers recognize Black-owned businesses while preserving the clean editorial style that defines HAWSÉ L’HOMME. Rather than interrupting the reading experience, the mark quietly identifies businesses whose ownership is an important part of their story.

Every feature in this journal is selected because it reflects quality, craftsmanship, creativity, exceptional service, or meaningful cultural contribution. Ownership alone is never the deciding factor. The businesses carrying The Heritage Mark have earned their place through the value they bring to their industries and communities.

My hope is that this symbol encourages readers to discover remarkable people, memorable places, and outstanding brands they may not have encountered otherwise. When you see The Heritage Mark, you’ll know you’re reading about a Black-owned business whose work deserves recognition—not because it is Black owned alone, but because it represents excellence, innovation, and enduring craftsmanship.
